A Brazilian centre-back with trademark curls and a habit of carrying the ball out of defence. He came through at Vitória in Brazil, moved to Benfica in 2007 and won the Portuguese league there in 2009-10, when he was also named the league's player of the year.

He joined Chelsea in 2011 and won the Champions League in 2012, the FA Cup the same year and the Europa League in 2013.

Paris Saint-Germain, 2014 to 2016

In 2014 PSG paid £50 million for him, at the time a world record for a defender. He wore number 32 in Paris and won Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue in both of his seasons. The 2014-15 home shirt is Nike, navy with the red central band and Fly Emirates on the front.

Chelsea again, Arsenal and Flamengo

He returned to Chelsea in 2016 and won the Premier League in 2016-17, the FA Cup in 2018 and a second Europa League in 2019. After two seasons at Arsenal he went home to Brazil and joined Flamengo in 2021.

He won 57 caps and the 2013 Confederations Cup. At the 2014 World Cup he scored the free kick that beat Colombia in the quarter-final, and captained the side in the 7-1 semi-final defeat to Germany.
