PUMA SHIRTS

Puma was founded by Rudolf Dassler after a split from his brother Adi, who went on to build Adidas, and the two companies competed out of the same small town of Herzogenaurach for decades afterward. In football that rivalry played out through kit deals rather than direct contact, and Puma built its own share of the market more slowly, picking up national teams and clubs across Italy, Africa and later Germany's Bundesliga rather than chasing the same handful of giants as its rival.

The core of this collection is Italy's national kit from the 2000s and 2010s: Materazzi's 2006 away shirt, Del Piero and De Rossi's home shirts from 2010, Pirlo's shirt from the 2012 tournament and Insigne's 2014-15 player issue jersey. Across a decade of Italy shirts the Puma template moves from a boxier fit with a simple crest to a slimmer cut with sublimated detailing by the time of the Insigne shirt.

Outside Italy, Feyenoord wore Puma through the early 2010s, shown here by Wijnaldum's 2010-11 home shirt and Pellè's shirts from 2012 to 2014, while Dortmund's training sweaters from 2016-18 mark a more recent Bundesliga deal. Newcastle United's Cisse player issue shirt and Ivory Coast's Drogba-era home kit round out a stable that stretched well beyond Puma's Italian core.

Puma's badge, a cat mid-leap, has changed little since the 1970s, which makes it one of the more reliable ways to place a shirt before checking the label. Combined with the season cues in each listing, from Chicago Fire's early-2000s MLS shirts to AS Monaco's 2009-10 tracksuit, it is worth checking the stitching and print style against the badge rather than assuming a modern-looking crest means a modern shirt.
