UMBRO SHIRTS

Umbro, founded in Wallasey in the 1920s, held the England contract for most of the 1990s, and that shows across the range: Shearer's 1993-95 home shirt, Gascoigne's 1994-95 away kit, Ian Wright's 1993-95 home shirt and Beckham's 1999-2001 home and 2004-06 away shirts all sit in this collection. Umbro's biggest club deal was Manchester United, and the stock reflects it heavily: Cantona's 1995-96 and 1996-98 home and away shirts, Beckham across three separate seasons, Keane's 2000-02 home shirt and Giggs's 1996-98 jersey. This is the run of United shirts from the treble season and the years either side of it, when an Umbro kit was as recognisable on the terraces as the results on the pitch.

Umbro's reach went well beyond English clubs. Ajax's 1998-99 home shirt and 1995-96 away kit carry the badge, as does Sweden's 2003-04 home shirt from Ibrahimovic's early caps and Lille's 2012-13 third shirt worn by Payet, a much later use of the brand outside its English core. Scotland and Northern Ireland also appear, both countries Umbro supplied through most of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Beyond Old Trafford, the collection includes Chelsea's 1999-2001 home shirt from Gianfranco Zola's era and Everton's 1999-00 away shirt worn by Kevin Campbell, alongside a Luton Town 1991-92 home shirt that shows Umbro's reach went well past the traditional big clubs. Together these smaller entries are a reminder that through the 1990s, Umbro fitted out a large share of the English top flight at once rather than chasing a handful of marquee deals the way brands tend to now.

An Umbro shirt from this period sits heavier in the hand than what came after it: thick cotton-poly weave, a fixed collar, and a straighter cut through the body than the shaped jerseys that followed in the 2000s.
