Design calms down after the nineties and the shirt gets tighter, shorter in the sleeve and lighter in the hand. Manufacturers move to bonded seams and mesh ventilation panels, sponsor logos shrink, and the club crest becomes the loudest thing on the chest again. What replaces the wild patterns is star power: this is the first decade where a jersey is bought for the name on the back as much as the badge on the front.

It also makes these the easiest vintage shirts to wear day to day. The fit sits close to a modern kit, unlike the baggier nineties cuts.

Barcelona runs deepest here, through Ronaldinho, Henry, Ibrahimović and the early Messi years. Real Madrid covers the Galáctico era with Zidane and Robinho, and Manchester United holds the Cristiano Ronaldo number seven and Rooney kits.

In Italy, AC Milan is the strongest single run we have, with Shevchenko, Kaká, Gattuso and the Ronaldo number 99. Inter brings Zanetti, Juventus brings Nedvěd. From the Eredivisie there is Feyenoord in Kappa and Ajax in Adidas, and on the international side Brazil from 2002, Portugal with Rui Costa, and oddities like the last Yugoslavia training kits, made for a country that no longer existed by the time they wore out.

The 2000s is where the split between the replica you could buy and the shirt the player actually wore becomes visible.
