What condition should I expect at this age?

Some honest wear is normal and is reflected in the grade we give each shirt. Fading, softened crests and old repairs happen on fifty year old cloth. The photos and the condition grade on the product page tell you exactly where a given shirt sits.

How do I work out my size?

Use the measurements, not the label. Seventies sizing runs much smaller than today, so compare the pit to pit and top to bottom figures on the product page against a shirt you already own.

Why is stock in this decade so limited?

Far fewer shirts were made and sold, and most of those that were got worn until they fell apart. Genuine seventies shirts surface rarely, so this collection changes shape as pieces come in and go out.

1970S SHIRTS

The oldest kits we handle, and the thinnest supply in the shop. Seventies shirts carry a crest, a colour and nothing else, because the sponsor era had not started yet. What survives is what somebody kept.

Before the sponsor era

A jersey from this decade has no logo across the chest and often no manufacturer's mark either. Shirt sponsorship was still banned or barely tolerated across most of Europe, so what you get is the kit stripped to its parts: the stripes, the hoops, the collar. Everything that followed, from the busier eighties designs to the pattern-heavy nineties, is a reaction to this starting point. The cloth is heavy too, a dense cotton or acrylic blend cut long in the sleeve, with flock numbers pressed on by hand that crack and lift in a way no modern print ever will.

Why so few survive

Replica sales were a fraction of what they later became, so most seventies shirts that still exist were actually worn, and then worn again until they gave out. That changes what condition means here. Fading, softened crests and old repairs are normal at fifty years and take nothing away from a shirt being original. Sizing is its own problem: a shirt marked large in 1974 usually measures closer to a modern medium, so use the pit to pit and top to bottom figures on the product page rather than the label. The rarest survivors from this period sit alongside our grail shirts.
